How good does it feel when you accomplish something you were striving for?
To cross that finish line or check that box on your goals list or make that final payment. Milestones like this are a great way to reflect on and appreciate just how far we’ve come.
The old fitness industry stood by milestones like your BMI or weight lowering or losing centimetres from a body part. While this can have it’s place, we know tracking these stats can make people obsessive.
In the new fitness industry we understand that health is a journey. It’s not about just getting people results fast, it’s about setting them up with lifelong habits.
So while that means you probably don’t want to be getting your clients to weigh in every week, it doesn’t mean we can track, reward and celebrate other milestones. Milestones that reflect the change in habits.
Here are some great milestones to track and celebrate with your clients:
- Number of sessions – e.g. first 10, then 50, 100, 200 and more!
- Annual milestones – e.g. 1 year, 2 years, etc.
- Streaks – the number of sessions attended without missing one (relatively short streaks like 30-days work best because, let’s face it, life happens)
- Steps taken or kilometres run – clients can use apps which share this with you
We all like to know that someone is paying attention to our hard work. Start acknowledging these milestones with your clients and you’ll be surprised by how much it inspires them to keep turning up, week after week.
Now I have a quesiton for you:
What milestones do you track? (or what milestones are you going to start tracking?) Let me know below.
Kyle Wood created Bootcamp Ideas in 2010 when he was hunting around on the internet for workout ideas. He ran a successful bootcamp in Victoria, Australia and spends his spare time managing this site, adventuring (or lazying) with his wife and find new ways to make bootcamps even better.
So true, there is so much more to fitness than just losing weight or inches!
At class (pre Covid) we’d have a little sign that clients would hold up in our group photo once they hit 100 sessions. They then become part of the 100 club!
After 200 sessions they get a free top (bright pink version of our “uniform”)
And we’re just starting to celebrate years spent together!
